In eight months’ time, an instrument called NOMAD will fly to Mars aboard the ExoMars mission of the European Spatial Agency (ESA)

In January 2016 the European Spatial Agency will launch ExoMars, a mission intended to study the atmosphere and underground of Mars, and specifically to search for gases of possible biologic significance. The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC) designed part of the NOMAD instrument, a key component of the ExoMars orbital spaceship specifically designed to study methane – a gas mainly produced by living creatures on Earth whose discovery on Mars in 2004 came as a real surprise.

Los telescopios gemelos del observatorio Gemini, con sus 8,1 metros de diámetro y su ubicación en ambos hemisferios (Chile y Hawái), disponen de un acceso privilegiado de todo el cielo. Within the central 10 pc of our Galaxy lies a dense cluster of stars, the nuclear star cluster, forming a distinct component of our Galaxy. Nuclear star clusters are common objects and are detected in ~75% of nearby galaxies. It is, however, not fully understood how nuclear clusters form. Because the Milky Way nuclear star cluster is at a distance of only 8 kpc, we can spatially resolve its stellar populations and kinematics much better than in external galaxies. This makes the Milky Way nuclear star cluster a reference object for understanding the structure and assembly history of all nuclear star clusters. We have obtained an unparalleled data set using the near-infrared long-slit spectrograph ISAAC (VLT) in a novel drift-scan technique to construct an integral-field spectroscopic map of the central ~10 × 8 pc of our Galaxy. To complement our data set we also observed fields out to a distance of ~19 pc along the Galactic plane to disentangle the influence of the nuclear stellar disk. From this data set we extract a stellar kinematic map using the CO bandheads and an emission line kinematic map using H2 emission lines. Using the stellar kinematics, we set up a kinematic model for the Milky Way nuclear star cluster to derive its mass and constrain the central Galactic potential. Because the black hole mass in the Milky Way is precisely known, this kinematic data set will also serve as a benchmark for testing black hole mass modeling techniques used in external galaxies. La pasada semana llegó de Heidelberg (Alemania) el frontal del instrumento CARMENES, un espectrógrafo que buscará planetas de tipo terrestre

El frontal del instrumento CARMENES ya se halla en fase de integración y comisionado en el Observatorio de Calar Alto. Se trata de la interfaz que conecta el telescopio con el instrumento y que recoge la luz del telescopio y la inyecta en las fibras que la envían a los dos canales (el visible y el infrarrojo cercano).

Este subsistema realiza además la adquisición y el guiado y recoge la luz que llega a través de las fibras de las unidades de calibración y la reinyecta en otras fibras que la envían a los dos canales.

Esta imagen de la nebulosa NGC 2359, en cuya obtención participaron investigadores del IAA, aparece como imagen espacial de la semana en la web de la Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA)

Esta escena de intensos colores muestra la gigantesca nube de gas brillante y polvo llamada NGC 2359. También conocida como la nebulosa del Casco de Thor, muestra dos brazos de gas en forma de arco emergiendo del núcleo central y curvándose hacia el margen superior derecho de la imagen, creando una forma que recuerda al casco del dios nórdico.
